Custom Pet Portraits from Photos – Behind the Scenes of a Recent Dog Portrait Commission
Custom Pet Portraits from Photos – A Recent Commission Featuring Seven Beautiful Dogs
Over the past few months, I've been working on some really special pieces of artwork. ✨ Creating custom pet portraits from photos is one of my favourite types of commissions, and every portrait tells its own story.
Watch How I Create Custom Pet Portraits from Photos
In the short video above, you can see snippets from a recent dog portrait commission that I completed. I was asked to create a collection of portraits for seven beautiful dogs, each with their own unique personality. It was such an honour to be asked to create these custom dog portraits and capture the character of each one.
When I work on pet portraits from photos, I always enjoy hearing stories about the animals whilst I draw. 💛

As a pet portrait artist in the UK, I create hand-drawn pet portraits that celebrate the animals people love most. Whether it's a dog, cat, horse, rabbit, or any other beloved pet, I work from your photos to create a personalised pet portrait that can be treasured for years to come.

Above: the finished portraits – seven custom dog portraits printed and ready to head to their owner. It was such a joy to illustrate each of these lovely dogs and capture their different personalities.
Over the coming weeks on my Instagram, I'll be sharing more examples of recent pet portrait commissions that I've been working on since before Christmas. Thank you so much to everyone who has ordered a portrait recently - it has been an absolute joy to draw them all. 🧡

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Pet Portraits
How do custom pet portraits from photos work?
I create all of my custom pet portraits using the photographs that you upload when placing your order. I carefully study your reference images and draw each portrait by hand using digital illustration, gradually building up layers to capture your pet's unique features and personality. Once the artwork is finished, I print and mount the portrait in my studio in East Yorkshire.
What animals can you draw?
Although many of my commissions are dog portraits and cat portraits from photos, I'm always happy to create portraits of any animal, including reptiles and other much-loved pets.
What do I need to provide to commission a pet portrait?
When ordering through my website, you'll be able to upload one or more reference photos of your pet. Clear photos where your pet's face and features are visible usually work best for creating a detailed and realistic portrait.
Are the portraits hand drawn?
Yes - every portrait is drawn completely by hand using digital illustration. I build each artwork from the beginning and do not use AI or automated filters. This allows me to carefully capture the details and personality that make each pet special. When I'm close to finishing the portrait, I send you a watermarked digital version to ask if you would like any amendments before I print the finished artwork.
How are the finished portraits printed?
All portraits are printed and mounted by me in my studio on Marrutt 230gsm Matte paper, which I choose for its beautifully smooth texture and the way it reproduces colours accurately from my original illustrations.
How long does each portrait take?
Each bespoke pet portrait takes a different amount of time, so it's difficult to answer this question! However, as a rough guide, once I've started a portrait, I usually finish within 1-2 weeks. The full timescale from receiving your order through to you receiving your finished piece of original artwork will also be dependent on how many portraits I'm currently working on, so please get in touch if you require your piece of artwork by a certain date, and I can give you a more accurate timescale! ☺️
